Thought to have originated in the middle-western hills along the southern slopes of Annapurna, Gurungs have long glorious presence in the history of Nepal. They hugely inhabit the districts like Gorkha, Lamjung, Kaski, Tanahu and Syangja in the west along with Okhaldhunga and Khotang districts in the east. Though, considered politically marginalized, Gurungs are rich and up front in culture, tradition, languages and religious practices.  They are refer to as colorful and vibrant ethnic community, with their own distinct and significant value amongst the other co existing communities of Nepal.

Gurung people, to a great extent have embraced Buddhist religious practices, despite the fact that they primarily followed Shamanism; some of the urban dwellers have even adopted Hinduism. Our focus during Gurung Cultural Tour will be exploring the cultural practices adopted by the Gurungs of the western Nepal. Tamu Lhosar (New Year) is the main festival celebrat Gurungs.  A tradition of 'Rodhi' has a dominant existence in the rural Gurung settlements, which is a gathering of boys and girls of similar age group where healthy flirting is done to impress the opposite sex, along with pleasing singing and dance performance. The villages like Siklesh, Sirubari, Ghandruk, Ghalegaun are the first class destinations to encounter the astounding culture of this simple yet fascinating community.

Gurungs have a long tradition of performing dances like Sorathi, Ghatu and others on one or many occasions. Also known for their bravery and gallantry as ferocious warriors, members of Gurung community have been serving the British and Indian military under the name of ‘Gurkhas’ for many years now.
