Trip Overview

Pokalde peak, admired for being one of the easy trekking peaks, spreads out in the Everest region. To be exact, it is elevated to the height of 5806m standing 12 km southwest of Mt. Everest. Also nicknamed as “Dolma Ri’, the peak was first ascent in 1953 through the ridge unifying the summit with the Kongma La high pass (5535m). The peak is categorize as group “B” climbing peak by Mountaineers Association of Nepal. The peak is best for the climbing during the season of March-May and Sept-Dec. On that time the rocky peak is barely cover with shiny snow.

As the trek doesn’t offer any technical difficulty, a well acclimatized group can easily ascent in a half day. However, approaching the peak with poor weather around can be risky as some portions of the peak are quite exposed to heart-pumping falls and also it may prove tough for amateurs as the section near the summit requires a stiffly vertical climbing which is unavoidably done with rope. Further, this ascent doesn’t require any ice axes and crampons.

The peak offers impressive panorama of summits which includes Makalu (8475m), Pumori, Ama Dablam (6856m), Everest (8848m), Nuptse (7879m), Lhotse (9501m), Baruntse (7720m), and many among others. The base camp of Pokalde  peak is style like an open theatre valley with a large circular lake in the middle, below the Kongma La pass. The base camp offers disturbing cold condition as temperature tend to even fall twenty degree below the freezing point.  Kongma glacier, which offers ice walls appropriate for ice climbing, is just about 40 minutes away from the base camp.

The peak is ascendable either from Bibre or Dughla, the most usual routes for the peak. The climbing gets more exciting and adventurous with each step up to the summit. Though climbing is easy, the journey can made ever rewarding and memorable only with professional and amiable guides. Trekkers with fair climbing experience can ascend the peak.
