Jeep Hire in Nepal: 4WD for Mustang, Manang, Rara and Langtang

A 4WD jeep with a local driver is the practical way to reach Nepal’s unpaved mountain roads, including the roads to Jomsom and Upper Mustang, Manang, Rara Lake and the Langtang valley. We arrange private jeeps for one-way drops, return trips and multi-day journeys, with drivers used to these routes.

Why a jeep, and when you need one

Paved highways in Nepal are fine for a car or van. Once the road leaves the highway and climbs into the hills, the surface often turns to gravel, mud or rock, with river crossings and sections cut into cliffs. Normal cars cannot manage these roads, and local buses on them are slow and crowded. A private jeep lets your group leave at the time you choose, stop for photos, and carry trekking bags on the roof or in the back.

Typical jeeps used in Nepal seat four to six passengers plus the driver. Prices on request: send the form or WhatsApp us for a quote.

Main jeep routes

The times below are typical in dry conditions. Rain, landslides and roadworks can add hours. Every route here should be checked close to your travel date.

Route Typical drive time Road Price
Pokhara to Jomsom 7 to 9 hours Paved to Beni; much of the road on to Jomsom has been widened and blacktopped in recent years, but some sections are still rough and landslide-prone On request
Jomsom to Lo Manthang 5 to 7 hours (about 90 km) Mostly unpaved, dusty, river crossings On request
Besisahar to Manang 6 to 10 hours Unpaved, narrow cliff sections, often blocked by landslides in the monsoon On request
Kathmandu to Syabrubesi (Langtang) 6 to 9 hours Mostly paved to Trishuli, then rough sections with landslide zones around Ramche and Dhunche On request
Surkhet to Rara 2 to 3 days Long mountain road via the Karnali Highway through Kalikot to Mugu, partly unpaved On request

Mustang: Jomsom and Lo Manthang

The road follows the Kali Gandaki valley from Beni up to Jomsom and Muktinath, then continues north to Lo Manthang in Upper Mustang. Many visitors drive to Jomsom and fly back to Pokhara, or the reverse. Afternoon winds in the valley are strong and dusty, so most drives start early. Local transport committees control some routes in Mustang, such as the Jomsom to Muktinath road, so whether a private jeep from outside Mustang may continue north of Jomsom, or whether you must change to a local vehicle, should be confirmed before you book. Ask us for the current arrangement.

If you are planning the full trek rather than a drive, see our Upper Mustang Trek (16 days), which includes permits and transport.

Manang

The road from Besisahar up the Marsyangdi valley reaches Chame and Manang. Some Annapurna Circuit trekkers drive part of the way to save days, then walk over Thorong La. The road has narrow sections cut into cliffs, and the drive is best done in daylight.

Rara Lake

Rara is in the far west and is a long trip by road. Most people fly part of the way, to Nepalgunj and then on a small plane to Talcha airport, a 2 to 3 hour walk from the lake. Talcha flights are few and depend on the weather, so they may not run every day. A jeep journey is possible for those with time. Plan for several driving days and basic lodges on the way.

Langtang

Syabrubesi is the trailhead for Langtang Valley and the start of the Tamang Heritage Trail. It is the closest Himalayan trekking area to Kathmandu by road, and a private jeep is more comfortable than the local bus on the rough stretches.

Permits are separate from jeep hire

Driving into a trekking or restricted area does not remove the need for permits. Your jeep driver cannot buy them for you on the road. The main ones:

  • Upper Mustang: restricted area permit, issued only through a registered trekking agency, with a licensed guide. The fee has long been US$500 per person for the first 10 days; in November 2025 the government decided to replace it with US$50 per person per day. Check the current rate and group rules when you plan your trip.
  • Jomsom, Muktinath and Manang: Annapurna Conservation Area Permit, NPR 3,000 for foreigners.
  • Langtang: Langtang National Park entry, NPR 3,000 for foreigners.
  • Rara: Rara National Park entry, NPR 3,000 for foreigners.

Some counters add VAT to these fees. We can arrange permits as part of a trek package. Ask when you enquire.

Weather and timing

The best months for mountain jeep travel are October to November and March to May. In the monsoon (roughly June to September), landslides and swollen rivers can close roads for hours or days. In winter, snow can block the higher sections, such as the road above Manang. If your jeep trip ends shortly before an international flight, leave at least one spare day. Ask us before you book how extra days caused by road closures are handled.

What is included

The quote covers the jeep and driver. Ask us what is included in your quote (fuel, tolls, driver’s meals and lodging on multi-day trips). Permits, your meals and your lodges are not included unless you book a full trek with us.

FAQ

Can a jeep take us all the way to Lo Manthang?

There is a road to Lo Manthang, but local rules may require a change of vehicle in Mustang. You still need the Upper Mustang permit and a licensed guide. We will confirm the current arrangement when you enquire.

How many people fit in one jeep?

Usually four to six passengers, depending on the model and the amount of luggage. Larger groups need two jeeps.

Is it safe to travel on these roads?

The roads are rough and some sections are exposed. Travel in daylight, avoid the peak monsoon where you can, and let the driver decide when to stop or turn back.

Can we hire a jeep one way and fly back?

Yes. A one-way drive to Jomsom with a flight back to Pokhara is a common choice. Flight times and fares change, so ask us to check them with the jeep quote.

Do I need a jeep for Pokhara or Chitwan?

No. A car or van is fine on the main highways. See Kathmandu to Pokhara by private car or car and jeep hire in Pokhara.

For other vehicles and routes, see vehicle rental in Nepal. Send us your route and dates and we will price the jeep and any permits you need.
