The vehicles on these pages come with a driver. Nepal’s roads, traffic and mountain sections are hard for visitors to drive, and a local driver also knows where to stop, where to park and how long each stretch actually takes.

When a private vehicle makes sense

Public and tourist buses in Nepal are cheap, but they run on fixed times, stop where the operator chooses, and do not go to many trailheads. A private vehicle is worth the extra cost in these cases:

  • Arrival and departure. After a long flight, a driver waiting at the arrivals exit saves you bargaining with taxi drivers.
  • Getting to and from treks. Many treks start where buses are slow or crowded. A private jeep or van can leave when your group is ready and drop you at the trailhead.
  • Groups. Once a group reaches six or more, a van or coaster often costs less per person than several taxis, and everyone travels together with their bags.
  • Stops on the way. On a highway day you can stop at Bandipur, the Manakamana cable car or a viewpoint without missing a bus.
  • Remote roads. Roads to Upper Mustang, Manang and Rara need a 4WD jeep and a driver used to unpaved mountain sections.
  • Business and events. Fixed pickup times for meetings, conferences or a wedding party.

Permits for trekking regions and restricted areas are separate from vehicle hire. If you travel to Upper Mustang, for example, you still need the restricted area permit, issued only through a registered trekking agency, and you travel with a licensed guide. The fee has long been US$500 per person for the first 10 days; in November 2025 the government decided to replace it with a daily fee of US$50 per person, so check the current rate when you plan your trip. Whether a vehicle from outside Mustang can drive into Upper Mustang, or whether you change to a local jeep, depends on local arrangements at the time, so ask us when you plan the trip. See our Upper Mustang Trek if you want the permit, guide and transport arranged together.

Travel times on common routes

Road times in Nepal depend on traffic, roadworks and weather more than distance. As a guide, Kathmandu to Pokhara (about 200 km) usually takes 6 to 8 hours by private car, and longer when roadworks between Naubise and Mugling cause delays. The route pages above give times for each journey, and your driver will advise on the day if a road is blocked. In the monsoon (roughly June to September), landslides can close mountain roads for hours or days, so leave a spare day before an international flight.

Helicopter charter

For places where the road takes days, or for a fast return from a trek, a helicopter charter may be an option. Ask us whether a charter can be arranged for your route and dates.

FAQ

Can I rent a car in Nepal without a driver?

The vehicles on these pages come with a driver. A driver who knows local roads is safer and usually faster, and you do not need to deal with fuel, parking or police checkpoints.

How much does it cost to hire a car with driver in Nepal?

It depends on the vehicle, the route and the number of days. Prices on request: send the form or WhatsApp us for a quote for your exact plan.

Which vehicle do I need for a group of eight trekkers?

A Hiace van is the usual choice. It seats the group and has space for duffel bags. See Hiace and van rental for details.

Do I need a 4WD jeep?

Only for unpaved mountain roads, such as the roads into Mustang, Manang, Rara or parts of Langtang. For Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and Lumbini a normal car or van is enough.

Can you pick me up from the airport?

Yes. See Kathmandu airport pickup and drop for how the meet-and-greet works.

What happens if a road is closed by a landslide?

The driver will wait, take another route where one exists, or return. Ask us before you book how extra days caused by road closures are handled.

How far in advance should I book?

For October, November, March and April, book as early as you can, as these are the busiest trekking months. Outside those months a few days’ notice is usually enough.

Tell us your route and dates, and we will suggest the vehicle that fits your group and send a quote.
